MORE VAMPIRE FILMS IN THE FUTURE
Universal and Imagine Entertainment studios have acquired the movie rights to all of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles books, along with the rights to adapt any future novels in the series.
Rice’s bestselling series follows an amoral, seductive 18th century nobleman turned vampire, Lestat de Lioncourt. The first book in the series, “Interview with The Vampire,” was published in 1976. Prince Lestat, Rice’s first Chronicles book after a hiatus of more than ten years, will be published this October.
Two novels have been adapted for film before, most famously in Neil Jordan’s 1994 “Interview with The Vampire,” which starred Tom Cruise as Lestat and Brad Pitt as his companion, Louis.
While Jordan’s film was well received by fans of Rice’s books, Michael Rymer’s 2002 “The Queen of the Damned,” an adaptation of the third book in Rice’s series, received overwhelmingly negative reviews. Rice herself later described the film as a “mutilation” of her work. But in March this year, the author hinted that she was ready for a new film adaptation of her books.
