Now here’s record breaker….a book of psalms from 1640, translated from the Hebrew, recently sold for 14 million dollars.
Known as the Bay Psalm book, it is the first book published in English in the Massachusetts colony. There are only 10 other known copies. The book was put up for auction by a Boston church, and was purchased by David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group private equity firm. He plans to loan the treasure out to museums. The colonial translators wrote they did not quote “smooth our verses with the sweetness of any paraphrase, and so have attended conscience rather than Elegance, fidelity rather than poetry.”
