Recently, people gathered at Purdue University  to read and celebrate the work of historian Howard Zinn, a man, I’m honored to say, was my professor at Boston University.

Zinn’s classic book A People’s History of the United States, has come under attack as being anti-American. In fact, when he was Indiana governor, Purdue President Mitch Daniels tried to remove it from the state’s classrooms.

Scholars attending the Purdue event believe teaching Zinn’s work helps students develop “a critical lens” through which history should be viewed, and it encourages kids  to stand up to injustice. The Purdue event was live-streamed and hosted in solidarity with 11 campuses.
